PROJEKT: LIFE Resistance – Comprehensive restoration of Danube floodplain habitats and support for resistance to plant invasive alien species

Organising a children’s camp was another milestone we reached as part of the LIFE Resistance project. In July we welcomed children to the very first edition of the Nature Conservationist Camp at Ecofarm Ostrov, and we can happily say: it was a beautiful week full of discoveries and fun.

The whole camp was built around the idea that nature conservation starts with people who know and understand nature. That is why we wanted to give the children not just experiences, but also concrete knowledge and skills they can carry with them through life.

Prednáška na ostrove

Together with an entomologist and a hydrobiologist, the children explored the biodiversity of the Danube area and learned about the species that inhabit the river and its riparian vegetation. Through various activities, they reflected on how closely nature conservation is linked to the way people use the landscape, what challenges conservationists face in practice, and why caring for nature is not always straightforward. We also dedicated time to the topic of invasive plant species. Practical outdoor skills were part of the programme too: how to safely start a fire, build a shelter for the night, and move confidently in the wild.

The children took part in a workshop with OZ PureLove focused on responsible waste management, which gave them space to think about how their everyday choices affect the environment. We brought the same philosophy into the kitchen: most of the food was prepared from ingredients provided by local farmers, opening up a conversation about where our food comes from and why it matters. The children also got to see how the farm works and what daily animal care looks like, giving them a hands-on perspective on the relationship between people and nature in everyday life.

The camp was made possible through funding from the LIFE Resistance project. We firmly believe that environmental education is one of the most important tools for nature conservation, and we are glad to be able to continue this work. We believe the children had a wonderful time and left with a slightly deeper understanding of the nature around them and a growing connection to it. That, for us, is the best possible outcome. The first edition is behind us, and we are already looking forward to the next one!
