Many insect species are tied to a specific habitat at the forest-meadow interface. In the past, this boundary was nowhere as clear and straight as it is today. The transition from meadow to forest used to be loose, sometimes only a few trees, sometimes tens of metres wide and had a woodland character.
We are writing this post in response to the attacks that we’ve been facing in recent days, directly or indirectly, on ourselves and our conservation projects, which we have been working on systematically for a long time.
The international LIFE WILDisland project brings together 15 partners from eight countries from Bulgaria to Germany. One of the very worthwhile and valuable traditions of the project is the annual meeting in the home country of one of the partners. This year we at BROZ had the honor to prepare an unforgettable experience for all of us in cooperation with our colleagues from Fertö Hanság National Park.
Thanks to 1076 supporters, we managed to collect the targeted amount. We are very happy that in approximately 10 months we managed to collect up to 100,000 euros and even a little more for the purpose of nature protection – saving the wetland in highly productive agricultural land.

At this site in the area of European importance Holubyho kopanice, the management is made more difficult by the occurrence of the large copper (Lycaena dispar) and the Jersey tiger (Callimorpha quadripunctaria), each of which has different requirements, host plants and we want to accommodate them all. We really have to proceed slowly, working by hand, at different times and in small areas.
After several years of efforts, negotiations with farmers, administrating permits, building fences and placing a well with watering holes, on August 15 we managed to bring cows to Apál Island, located at the confluence of Váh and Old Nitra rivers.
In the area of European importance Beckovské skalice there are also colourful meadows, which were restored by the State Nature Conservancy in our joint project LIFE Butterflies CR-SR, which ended in 2016. They have been mowed annually since then by the administration of the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area.
