PROJEKT: Conservation of European Ground Squirrel
Obnovená pastva pre sysľa v Tisovskom krase

BROZ in cooperation with the local cooperative has begun to graze livestock on 18 hectare of land in Tisovský kras where the ground squirrel population has been on the decline due to inapopriate land management. The donkeys and cows have a lot of work ahead of them before the squirrels wake up from their winter hybernation. Return of grazers to the locality is the first and most important conservation intervention to safeguard the existing population as the grazers will improve the ground squirrel habitat quality. In order to increase the genetic diversity in the population we are planning to re-locate individuals from the near by Muránska planina where a thriving population exists. With the aim of increasing the feeding opportunities for the colony we will also plant native fruit trees in the locality.
