PROJEKT: Restoration and management of Danube floodplain habitats
Since February 2018 restoration works on the channel have been done in the middle of the Danube Island Veľký Lél. The channel takes the water from the river branch bringing it into the middle of the Island. Originally it was built by the locals in the last centuries and it had opposite purpose than it has today – it was supposed to speed up the water outflow from the pastures on the island which used to stay there after regular life-giving Danube floods occuring 2 – 3 times a year. In the present floods occur once a year or even less frequently (e.g. once in 3 years). This is not enough to ensure habitats and animals bound to regular floods to survive dry summer. It is even not enough for grazing the farming animals on the Island, because the grass is dry already in July. This is the reason to use the channel to bring the water from Veľkolélske rameno branch when the water level in Danube is high enough. This activity has been realized within the activity C.2: Restoration of river branches lateral connectivity and water regime of wetlands. The channel has been restored in the lenght of 690 m and the reconstructed sluice gate enables not only to regulate water flow and its outflow in and out of the river branch, but it also enables migration of the fish and other aqatic animals.
