On June 29, 2020, the celebration of Danube Day featured rafting on this mighty river, together with children from A. Dubček Elementary School.
The rafting trip began with a brief lecture about the Danube, its floodplain forests, and the revitalization of the Karloveské side arm. The children were introduced to the local wildlife, especially fish, and were even able to see life-sized models of some species. In addition to learning about the fish that currently inhabit the area, they also discovered the great sturgeon, the largest fish that used to thrive in our waters. Unfortunately, due to dams blocking its path, the great sturgeon can no longer reach our region.
Right after the brief lecture, all the students, along with their teachers, members of BROZ, and instructors from the KVŠ Lodenica, rafted down the Karloveské side arm of the Danube. At the end of the rafting trip, a variety of fun and educational activities awaited them at the boathouse. These included identifying species of snails by touch, assembling a life-sized wooden puzzle of a great sturgeon, observing small aquatic creatures under a microscope, and comparing a monoculture floodplain forest with a diverse forest on a magnetic board.
Everyone was satisfied, as both the event and the weather turned out well in the morning hours, even though the playful students ended up getting wet nonetheless.
