During the past weekend (27th-28th January 2024), we organized an active event for the public in eastern Slovakia, directly above the city of Kráľovský Chlmec. The territory of European significance, Veľký Kopec, which stands out on an andesite hill above the surrounding lowland landscape, represents rare fragments of steppe plant communities, where we can also find some protected plant species such as the pasqueflower (Pulsatilla grandis) and the Hungarian iris (Iris aphylla subsp. hungarica). In collaboration with farmer Arnold Dócs, local enthusiasts, and tremendous support from OZ SAVE NATURE, we helped remove this picturesque pasture from Invasive alien plant species, as well as shrubs and dense woody vegetation. These represent a threat to this territory and can jeopardize the existence of valuable communities and species. Thanks to the LIFE SUB-PANNONIC project and the farmer’s immense willingness, grazing by goats continues to expand on restored areas and ensures or improves the favorable condition of dry grassland habitats, benefiting all plants and associated animals. In conclusion, we would like to once again thank everyone who contributed, whether through work in the field or through cooking and supporting this event.
