PROJEKT: LIFE Resistance – Comprehensive restoration of Danube floodplain habitats and support for resistance to plant invasive alien species

We are pleased to announce the commencement of a crucial conservation activity within the Natura 2000 site in Szigetköz. Our project partner, László Szomolányi, has introduced water buffalo grazing on a 12-hectare area in October 2024, marking a significant step towards habitat restoration and biodiversity enhancement. The area has a wetland character and is therefore ideal for water buffalo. They will assist us in suppressing invasive plants. And not only that. They will support local soil diversity as well as animal and plant diversity.

Grazing plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of grasslands and wetlands. Water buffalos, with their natural foraging behavior, help create a diverse vegetation structure, benefiting various plant and animal species. Their grazing activity prevents the overgrowth of dominant grasses and promotes the regeneration of native flora.

One of the key advantages of this approach is the suppression of invasive alien species (IAS). By selectively feeding on aggressive, non-native plants, water buffalos help reduce their spread, allowing indigenous vegetation to thrive. This method provides a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to mechanical or chemical interventions, aligning with Natura 2000 conservation objectives.

The introduction of grazing in this area is expected to improve habitat quality, support local biodiversity, and contribute to long-term ecosystem resilience. We look forward to monitoring the positive impacts of this initiative and sharing further updates on its progress.
