[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\r\n\r\nSince the beginning of the year, we launched a regular field monitoring of potential biocorridors \u2013 \u201ehighways\u201c for the root vole together with the project partners, the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University in Bratislava (<\/span>Pr\u00edrodovedeckou fakultou UK<\/span><\/a>\u00a0) and the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic (<\/span>\u0160t\u00e1tnou ochranou pr\u00edrody SR<\/span><\/a>). Similarly, as we have not any highway connection between Bratislava and Ko\u0161ice, the root vole lacks an interconnection between its localities. Gradual transformation of wetlands into agricultural land has resulted in loses in refugia for this rare European endemic species and its localities have become more and more isolated. Thanks to many years\u00b4 monitoring conducted by the staff of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University we know that the root voles were forced out into three areas being interconnected very lightly or not at all as a\u00a0result of intensive agriculture and land dewatering. The first area is represented by the \u00a0<\/span>Dunajsk\u00e9 luhy<\/span><\/a> protected landscape area. However, this has become more and more inhospitable refuge for the root vole because of gradual drying. On the other Danube side, there is the second locality with a\u00a0centre in the area of \u010cil\u00ed\u017eske mo\u010diare wetlands and along the \u010cil\u00ed\u017esky potok stream. The third centre is represented by the old Nitra river Alluvium along with wetland fragments such as Listov\u00e9 jazero lake, Pohrebi\u0161te or Matovsk\u00e1 mokra\u010f wetlands.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThanks to nearly one-year research of potential biocorridors and \u201estepping stones\u201c, many potential biocorridors were proposed based on habitat\u00b4s area but also ownership circumstances. Subsequently, they were checked in the field both by walking and using a\u00a0drone. This provided us with better view on interconnection of individual wetland fragments. We believe that wide professional variety of participants of these monitoring researches will assure identification of the most proper and important line and area elements. Subsequently, we will provide their applicable condition and as highest connectivity as possible what would assure re-connection for the three most significant localities of root vole occurrence.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe research within the first phase was focused on interconnection of the area around the old Nitra river Alluvium and the area around the \u010cil\u00ed\u017esky potok stream being full of water again after a\u00a0long time period. The \u010cil\u00ed\u017esky potok stream, the lower section of which was restored within the first LIFE project focused on root vole protection (<\/span>Ochrany hrabo\u0161a seversk\u00e9ho pan\u00f3nskeho<\/span><\/a>),<\/span> is one of the most important biocorridors, which ought to represent a\u00a0supporting pillar of connectivity between the individual occurrence localities of the root vole thanks to its planned connection with the channel of \u010c\u00ed\u010dovsk\u00e9 rybn\u00edky ponds along with creation a\u00a0wetland near the Lyonsk\u00fd kan\u00e1l channel. Only through the interconnection of populations, which have been fragmented\u00a0 for many years, we will be able to provide the geneflow being inevitable for maintaining the health populations of these \u201emarsh mices\u201c.<\/span>\r\n\r\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
